— — Update: I successfully installed Windows 7 on the machine and then restarted multiple times before I shut the computer. I was able to download the Taiwanese version of the WOW installer on the machine and it was able to download the whole installing folder on the machine(7.4GB). It’s going to take a long time so I will finish it tonight. I decided to not update the system because I believe the OS update somehow messes up the machine.

Computer can be so difficult sometimes.

Like the past few days. Here is the story.

My friend’s computer was all messed up after he installed new ram and video card so we decided to start from scratch. We formatted the hard drive, open up the case and reconnected all the components and then dusted the whole thing. I have to say, that is the most dusty tower I have ever seen. So we put everything back together and I told him that it would be great to install windows 7′s release candidate on it. I’ve been using it for a long time and everybody on the internet is loving the new windows. He agreed and everything was cool when we first rebooted the system. The next day, I got a call from him and basically the system got all fucked up after the second reboot. So I went back again and did the whole thing again, he was right, got some weird problem that after the second reboot, we are missing a dll file. A freaking missing DLL file on a brand new machine. Can you believe it?

Anyway, so it isn’t working out for this machine.  So we decided to install windows xp on it. Everything load up fine. Installed service pack 2, everything is cool, installed service pack 3, everything messed up. WOW. My friend became upset because he hasn’t been able to do raid in WOW for the past 2 weeks. And I got pissed off because his bad mood is actually affecting my mood. So today, I am going to take his pc home with me and do a complete diagnose and hopefully I can fix it.

So this is personal. Let’s talk about computer issue at work.

I was assigned to work on the backup server at work. Tried to install ESXi, hang at module USB; tried to install FreeNAS, doesn’t recognize the ethernet device; tried to install Openfile, hang for no reason; tried to install Ubuntun and then setup Samba, got this weird softrest failed error, can’t install. So finally I installed windows 7 on it, installed VM workstation, was able to install Ubuntun under VM and setup the Samba, shared folder under windows and mounted it in Ubuntu and shared it using Samba. Everything seemed fine.

I know there had to be something wrong. MAC can’t write to NTSF drive. I can’t format the disc to other format because it was a soft partition. Good thing is that there is software on MAC side that enable the system to read and write to NTSF disk and also I have two other 1TB disks that I can format with FAT32. However, all of these stuff requires extra work and not to mention the FAT32 will slow down the share drive dramatically. For all the computer advances, you’d think everything should be very easy these days but it’ll never be easy if there’s money and power involved.
